I've been having problems with getting a good alternator to "match" the VR.
By putting the jumper there, you are making connection by bypassing internals of VR.
It could be that VR is not adjusted correctly and internal solenoid cannot do the job of directing voltage to ground to avoid...

I had a Chevelle one time that previous owner put aftermarket gauges in to replace/work with the idiot lights.
He had a thing about keeping original lights working, so, he set up piping for oil to include two sending units. Original and aftermarket sender units were on a "sideways T" type of...
Found that the resistors on back side of VR were grounding our on a bolt head. Isolated it, and charging stopped. Ran new wires to give casing ground. Ran new FLD wire to alternator. Still no charging. Oh well, it was a trial and error thing.
Car is scheduled to get rewired.
Charging seems to be okay, but when running there is a “red low” behind VR.
I don’t run it long, and red glow is almost instant.
I don’t remember a led there.
