Kern Dog.... I fought basically the very same issue with my car recently and it did nearly the exact same thing right down to starting and running on 7 cylinders and then all 8 after attaching last wire. I previously posted about this with a post titled 'Sunday and no spark' or something along...
Well.... I finally made it to 'another day' and had a little time to investigate the movement in the cap while cranking. Hopefully this is all that's keeping me from getting it running.
Progress.... Progress is good right? I want to thank you all for the help. Private messages, diagrams, phone calls and text messages, texted pictures and videos are a life saver.... It all has really helped. I'm not out of the woods yet but I am so much farther along than I was. I now have a...
Yes... I have a (very) little knowledge of this ignition system and hopefully with the immense amount of knowledge out there and the wonderful denizens of the internet that share their knowledge I may end up with quite a bit better understanding of this system...
If you would like to hop on a...
Absolutely! I am trying to gain some knowledge from this thread also to be used on my own car....I'm really disgusted I am having so much trouble with what will probably be a simple fix but wiring and electrical is not a strength of mine...
I also have the same harness pulled off my bulkhead fitting right now. The red wire on yours is where my fusible link is. Do you know if the entire ignition harness is fed off that wire position? I cant get any spark out of my ignition right now and I am getting deeper into this than I feel...
My wife is ever so pleased with me right now for having the entire ignition/charge harness laying on the table....
If the individual wires have no resistance/opens I will reinstall but I still feel like I am having a wiring problem. The center/middle bulkhead connector is the harness I have...
Ok... Pickup coil is installed but I am struggling with the wiring and schematics. I'm color blind so that adds another level of challenge. I am seriously considering buying a points type distributor so I can feed it directly off the battery just to get this running. I also ordered a new ECM...
New pickup coil from NAPA (Echlin) shows resistance through the coil.
Maybe I'll have time later this weekend to install but I still think I has some other wiring issues. I bought this car a few years ago and have not changed anything as far as wiring but that does not explain why I have a 4...
Thank you! Looks like I may be heading in the right direction. Not to say that there isn't other problems but the pickup coil sure seems to be one of them. Wish I had a stash of them in my garage!
I have ordered a new pickup coil assembly. I can not get any continuity through the 2 wire plug at the distributor nor resistance through the coil inside the distributor. Lots of movement in the wires made no changes....
L1/green Key in run position. Zero to .66 volts.
L2/red key in run position has full battery voltage. Drops to 9.5V or so when cranking.
Top connector into resistor is blues wires
1969 440 6BBL Roadrunner clone - Started out life as a 318 Satelite from what I can tell.
Nothing added or changed recently. Engine was completely rebuilt last fall and has run flawlessly until this issue happened about 3 weeks ago. Literally started engine to go for a drive and did not make it...
Nothing has been done under gap except set reluctor to pickup coil gap. .008'' How do I test? IS there a certain resistance I should look for at the 2 wire plug for the distributor?
All 3 connectors at bulkhead pulled and while they show their age nothing seems to be burned. Fusible link is good and passes battery voltage through it. ECU is welled grounded, test light lead to + battery terminal shows good ground and lights the test light right up when touched to ECU.
Still...
