Got it.
Oddly enough, it seems I've been in contact with Jim. I never followed up with him after my car went down, temporarily. Lost his info. Did a quick Facebook search and found our old conversation. Meeting with him on Friday. Thanks for the recommendation.
Got back into the car today. So, checking power at the plug that goes onto the prongs on the back of the circuit board. I have the orange wire that shows power when the headlights are on and the one next to it being powered with key on.
Key-on wire showed 11.x volts, the orange wire, around 10.x...
There are none that I can find. At least none willing to help. I've offered to pay what I had to. Actually found one guy that didn't want to do the work but was willing to walk me through it over as many weekends as it took, for a fair price. He flaked on me weekend after weekend while my car...
All I did was swap a rotor cap when the issue started. Again, it's a long story that I have documented in another thread. I won't bore everyone with it here. Lol
Lucky! Not one person in my town of 750,000 people are able to help. I'm on my own.
Yes, I know what I have. Luckily I have a "few"...
Current issue is a long story. Short version: crazy detonation under load, especially with higher IATs. I'm slowly tuning it out, best I can. Super frustrating.
If I decide to swap to a roller setup, that would be much more involved and not sure it's something I'd feel like learning. So it's a...
I'm torn between keeping the flat tappet and doing roller. I'm pretty sure all the extra zinc in my oil isn't the greatest for my wideband sensor. I like keeping things as OEM for simplicity but also know that I may need to make some changes for longevity.
I'm taking a running engine apart, looking for obvious defects and checking a few things, then putting it back together again with the new heads. So, at least I know everything works together. In all honesty, if I had to worry about all the stuff above, I probably wouldn't bother and just ship...
LOL.
Yes, the hoist and lift help TONS. It would be a bit easier if the car didn't take up 100% the length of the garage. I'll have to back it in and work on it with the garage door open. No worries unless it rains (not a lot where I live).
I'm basically told by the "old timers" the engine...
I have been searching this forum all day and haven't found an answer to my question. I know I'm probably the 1000th person to ask this, so apologies in advance for having search skills that suck. Actual question is below in bold print.
Anyway..
Quick background for reference:
I've been...
Another update.
1. Drove the car last night. it was mid to low 80*F ambient. Coolant temp reached 180*F with intake temps under 90*F, so I got on it. Not one bit of noise while driving the car. I even re-flashed my old tune back onto the car with the original timing. No noise. So.. It's heat...
It's possible there are grounds missing. The guy I bought the car from wasn't much mechanically inclined. Easy miss.
Headlights going off and on turned out to be a loose wire in the bulkhead. Fixed.
Gauge cluster is still a mystery.
Plugs are kept to factory, I'll have to go back and look for...
It only smoked when I started hearing the noise and gave it the beans, out of frustration. No smoke any other time.
I thought i posted the numbers. Will look them up and edit this and the original post.
I have no vacuum advance. I'll check my data log for timing at that RPM. With all the...
Update:
The car is now running on Sniper EFI with their electronic ignition. Distributor, coil, all changed. multiple sets of plugs and wires. No plug wires touching. 91oct fuel, even added octane booster, out of desperation.
The problem is still there. I've reduced timing, little by little...
Some don't make the (rather pricey) change to electronic ignition. I did because I was chasing an issue that continues to persist, no matter what I do.
I'm now convinced I have a mechanical problem so may just tear down the engine if I see nothing in any of the cylinders, with my scope. I'm out...
Got, thank you, and I'll be testing next week!
I have not moved nor changed any bulbs yet. I haven't touched anything since swapping circuit boards and installing them. I will say the new bulbs do not fit into the board as tight as the old bulbs. I wouldn't rule them out. It would be my luck...
