    Manifold flapper restore or nah?

I was planning on keeping my flapper - 70 Charger SE, 373 HP, numbers matching in full restoration mode right now. It seems to be functional; however, I like the idea of removing just the flapper so it looks original from the outside. Thanks for the idea

    Alan's 1970 Charger Restoration

Transmission is almost done. The shop is spending a lot of time on gaps and body lines. I'm trying to be patient - plenty to do in the meantime. The axle and differential are next up.

Axle & Diff Rebuild Time -

Ok, so next up on my rebuild list is the rear axle and diff. 70 Charger SE, 383 HP, Auto, 8 3/4 Suregrip, 489 case (not sure of gear ratio until I remove the axles and pig). It was running/driving when parked in '83 (42 years ago) and everything spins. Based on the odometer, it has around 114k...

    7290 U Joints

Thanks for the detailed response and info!

    7290 U Joints

Everything is still "good/not damaged" but the caps came off during disassembly, and needle bearings went every where. If the needle bearings are available, I could clean and reassemble.

    7290 U Joints

Based on the part number in the picture (2781937) , I believe I need the 7290 U-Joints. Are they the same (front and back) on a stock 70 Charger, 383 HP, Auto, and 8 3/4 suregrip? The yokes measure the same, so guessing they are the same but looking to see what's normal. Do people rebuild them...

Too much end play after rebuild

Thanks - it's hard to get a good grip on the input shaft in that position and pull it out. It moves easier in the upside down position :)

Too much end play after rebuild

Thanks - just had to confirm for myself that I didn't miss anything. It's the only way my brain would let it go.

    2nd half of pics.

Too much end play after rebuild

Ok, today's update. I installed the extension housing and it's much better. I measure the movement (endplay) of the input shaft 2 different ways. 1. I set the entire assembly on the floor - output shaft. In this position, I wasn't able to move the input shaft back and forth much at all and...

    Happy birthday rklewis1005

Thanks all! Birthdays aren't a big thing anymore (58) until retirement age! I did get a bday present a month ago - had my wife buy an Orange 383 Magnum Pie Tin off eBay :)

Too much end play after rebuild

I have not put the extension housing on yet. I'll try that first - it may lower the total endplay, but wouldn't expect it to have much of an effect on the input shaft end play.

Too much end play after rebuild

I have one on order but it will be a few days. When we get home tomorrow, I'm going to carefully disassemble and review this thread. Going over everything again carefully (again) and taking pics during disassembly/reassembly.

    Headliner insulation/sound deadening

Has anyone used the AMD insulation stuff on the floor boards or roof? I'm not there yet, but since my wife doesn't want me to add AC, I want max heat insulation for the roof/headliner & sound deadening.

Too much end play after rebuild

That's with the input shaft pulled out as far as it can. It goes back and feels fully seated, but clearly it shouldn't move that much.

Too much end play after rebuild

As I mentioned, I did not take the gear & washer out of the sun gear ( the book seemed to skip that). I'll take a closer look at the thrust washer on it as I disassemble it. I'm not sure the thrust washer kit had a replacement (see pic of what's left) as isn't that one flat (no tabs)?

Too much end play after rebuild

I had another one in that position if your talking about on the end of the output shaft. The pic is where I'm talking about - I think I used the original washer there as I didn't have an exact match on the rebuild kit. You're saying that 3 tabs small one goes there?

Too much end play after rebuild

Yes - in a 1970, date built of course is 69

Too much end play after rebuild

Thanks, I'll check those out in my pictures and as I reassemble

Too much end play after rebuild

I'll double check, but fairly sure I put a non metal thrust washer on the back side of it. Seems to me it was closer to .062
