I've noticed several posts with drivers saying they carry an extra ballast in their car. Dang things could go bad at the most inconvenient time. Fortunately mine was at home.
I have the same red interior on my 66 Charger GTX 6970. Same boots and the car was in the same family since new. No doubt yours are original or the original type.
Thank you for the detailed explanation and thank you Don for the parts offer. I'm printing this for future reference in case I want to make the change. It appears that I would need Dons parts to do this correctly and I'm not sure it's even necessary. The engine runs pretty decent for its...
FYI, I have a 2004 Dodge Ram with the ABS system. The Abs unit is known for failure and no aftermarket or factory replacement is available. On the advice of a local shop I pulled the fuse that operates the unit so I'm now using the system like we did before ABS. Replaced all the rotors and...
Very interesting article and thank you. I do have a working vacuum advance and the original CAP carb. When rebuilding the carb I read the instructions that came with the kit and the caution to not remove the idle screws. They had a "stop" to them but mine had been overcome in the past and I...
I'll try disconnecting it and see what it does to timing. That's what has be curious. How can timing be retarded 15 degrees with that device? I'll mark where it is now and then see what it does when disconnected. If it remains retarded then I can try bumping it up to stock for an engine w/o...
I wish to check my timing on the 66 California Charger with a 383 HP engine. This was the first year a smog device was required and only installed on CA cars I believe. So I have a vacuum module that I believe retards the spark/timing and a CAP carb which has a vacuum port routed to the module...
Both the 67 and the first new car I bought, a 1963 Plymouth Fury with a HP383 and a 4-spd had the dual points. Have a couple project cars now, 1964 Chrysler 300K models, that have the 413 autos and have dual points. Another K is a X-Ram car auto with dual points. Also a project car. So it...
It was not. But was the fastback model like the Chrysler body and a really great engine. L code I believe it's called. I would still have the car today except I did not order it with A/C and at the time after market A/C was not an option. Had it for 10 years. Still have the order form the...
A clear cap would be very cool. Could stand there for hours and watch all 8 firing off over and over. Back in the day I never had an issue with a cap. Especially going only 10K miles. I did have issues once in awhile with the dual points. Recall one time going over Tioga Pass in Yosemite in...
Holy Moly. I can create plasma in a distributer...and ions, atoms, electrons??? The 70's were different times. Maybe this theory came from some guy smoking something at the corner of Haight and Ashbury. Seriously though there must have some data that led to this. Maybe electronic ignition...
Recently replaced ignition parts on my 66 383HP Charger including the pictured black cap. Never seen one with a breather. Standard brand I believe. Anyone else seen these and have an explanation why it would be needed? Pertronix electric ignition if that matters.
Installed the new coil with the P-II unit, bypassed the resister with a jump wire and the engine started right up. Removed the resister and saw the metal conductor rod is broken. Might have been the cause of heating up and restricting voltage to the original coil. No idea if it broke before...
Small update. Went thru the checklist and determined that the P-1 is still testing okay. So that does not tell me why when reinstalled the engine would not start. Tested the coil per the checklist and it appears to also be okay. 2 ohm resistance which is within the range. Three other coils...
Just contacted Pertronix tech help. They sent me a trouble shooting guide to locate the problem. He said you cannot use the Pertronix II unit with the ballast resister in place and you need a different coil. 6 ohm resistance. You can use the ballast resister in the older unit (P-1) with a...
One thing I noticed on the resister is that turning the ignition on w/o starting the engine it gradually heated up. If I have to bypass it would you be able to explain how you did that on your Charger? Two wires are coming into the resister. I can look at the wiring diagram to determine where...
Did notice the paperwork mentions to get the optimum performance bypass the ballast resister. And suggests using a power relay P/N 2001. Figured the old parts work with it so maybe the new ones will too. So my first thought was to investigate how to do that but put the old parts back in while...
There are other posts on this issue but this is a little different. I have a 66 383 with an older Pertronix unit installed and the car has been running well but I can tell it's been in there a long time and the Pertronix owner did not recognize the number on the unit. The cap looks well used...
The one I got from Rock Auto was a Raybestos product. No indication where it was made but seems to fit well. Still have a slight pull but the shoes are still breaking in and a final adjustment will be made once they arc themselves. Nice to have all four drums working. Tried Craig but did not...
