Allow engine to get to operating temp...make sure carb is properly cleaned and linkage is working freely. Install a vacuum gauge carefully bottom set screw, Turn mixture screw to achieve the highest vacuum reading.... Reset curb Idle.....and max .

I have found that the AVS & AFB carter's have leakage issues at the throttle shaft bores..

There are factors which will cause dieseling....hot running engine, carb running too lean.(throttle blades are open too much.)..fuel octane too low....carbon buildup....late timing... vacuum leak.idle speed being set just a little high...
