I've never seen a 68 model year Hemi without a VIN stamp.... Hemi's were special & got treated differently.....
I have seen a few early 68 model year 440's built in 67 without a stamped VIN.... But I've also seen early 68's built in 67 that were stamped...
I've seen plenty of 383's from mid...
Have you tried doing a Google search of your VIN? There are lots of posts on various websites of found broadcast sheets and even an occasional fender tag... Along with documents from selling dealers and all sorts of other things....

Being a 68 it's pretty hard to tie the stamped body numbers to the VIN... Gotta have an original broadcast sheet Or some other likely long lost paperwork...
I'll agree using the fender tag on a different car body would be a dead giveaway... Someone who's doing this would want the tag to...
I know it does not have a sway bar because we can all see that it does not have a sway bar.... At no point did I say it didn't originally have one.... Seeing the lower control arms would give a clue but wouldn't prove anything cause they could have been swapped.....

No reason to feel bad... Your post pointed out a very likely scenario... The tool broke or got misplaced.... I can't believe Hamtramck free hand stamped every engine... Typically most manufacturers who are stamping a number on every item going out the door used something like this.... Or...

Odd the engine numbers are straight & the transmission numbers are all over the place..
