There has to be a reason that the filters were not functioning correctly. Please analyze it and let us know why. I am sure that we all have used plenty of Fram filters in our lives without a problem.
Show us some pictures of what you are working on, please. There is lots of bolts on the car, you will, probably, have to look for each of the parts fasteners individually. On some you may have to figure out what size and find a bolt at the hardware store or something like that. I learned to...
It couldn't be anything too serious if it was running strong when you parked it. Maybe the filter is clogged up or something like that. 'Major engine damage doesn't just happen because it is sitting.
Change the filter, it is cheap enough.
We need all of the info. Maybe a Holley or Edelbrock carb, maybe a single plane or dual plane intake manifold. It all works together. Hook everything up correctly and it has a better chance of working. The best place to start.
Too big of a carburetor for mild engine. A good 650 even a 750cfm would be much more responsive. The 950 is probably very sensitive on the secondary spring rate with that huge secondary venturi. jetting right for altitude and power valve right as per Holley recommendation would be a good place...
Go for it. It is as good as any for the price. If you like the car...they are all going to take plenty of work, so no reason to pay too much up front. Offer them 2500 and take it home and get started.
I consider it "early " because it has the 67 parts that were used before January '68. I'm not sure about '71 cars. Just letting OP know October isn't the earliest.
