I have a '67 Belvedere and am currently running 275/60/15 on factory 7.5" steel wheels with 4.5" backspace. Tires fit perfectly, but my rear ride height is taller than stock, which helps. I have a set of same size drag radials I want to put on car with 8" rims, so I've researched this subject...
On my '67 Belvedere ll hardtop, I have 275/60/15 on 7.5 in factory steel wheel. No issues at all. Leaf spring is closest rub point. Have higher than stock ride height.
My buddy told me when he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia that they had mandatory yearly safety inspections. He also told me they paid some guy $50 and got the sticker for their cars that had no chance of passing !
