Yes that's correct, non-adjustable. I could have set them to any height I wanted though.
To have them adjustable on these seats would either require a custom seat frame be made, or have a mechanism in the head rest support arms.
I'll do up a dimensioned drawing when I get time - the polystyrene...
There's a few things I forgot to mention. The chrome from the scrap yard head rests I used for the frame looks dirty in the first few photos because it was. It was a combination of dirt and glue from the original foam and fabric. It's polished up lovely now with a bit of metal polish.
Also I...
If anyone is interested I've finally (nearly) completed my head rests.
I just started a thread with how I did it.
How to Make Head Rests for a 66 Satellite
Last step was to get them covered.
A local upholstery guy did them for me and I collected them today. I haven't installed them fully yet as I'm flat out working but I'll get to it after Easter.
This is what I had before, horrible slip on head rests:
This is what I wanted to achieve:
This...
Following all that I trial fitted the headrest on the passenger side - it seemed to be ok but the frame had become loose in the polystyrene as they'd made them out of low density stuff for some reason and I was yanking on them trying to get them onto the studs. I went back to see them and they...
Man, writing these threads is hard! Especially on the phone.
So I didn't know how I was going to attach the head rest to the seat until I started drilling. The original plan was to slide the whole head rest frame down through the holes into the seat structure but that idea changed.
The seat...
Then I drew up the dimensions of what I wanted, using a photo as a reference and trying to scale it from there. I took my drawing to a local polystyrene supplier and they made up 2 for me.
I then had to file out the shape of the frame and glue the 2 halves together, using PVA glue...
If anyone is interested in making headrests for their 66 Satellite with Bucket Seats - I've just done the job.
Manufacture
I started by buying a couple of head rests off a modern car from the scrapyard. I stripped the material covers and split the polystyrene inners apart. I then cut the...
I added them in to my 66 Satellite. I didn't weld anything in - I had the headliner out to clean up the metal underneath and while I was there I driiled a hole through the roof / C Pillar where I wanted to mount the belt. The square access hole to the right of the picture below is big enough to...
This is a photo of what I'll be trying to achieve when I finally get back on to it. I might end up custom making them - I could pick up a couple of modern headrests for about $20 from the scrap yard and then widen/lower them as required.
The seat back is pretty heavy. There must be some sort of crush force if the seat back is coming forward and the seat belts are holding you. That was my thinking anyway. I actually locked the seats before I fitted the 3 point belts, and left the drivers seat locked after I'd fitted them. I enjoy...
Agreed - the '66 Satellites have seats that just tip forward in a crash. Coupled with lap belts and no headrests (and a fixed steering column) they are pretty sketchy.
I've locked my front seat with some L brackets off the main seat back bolt so it can't come forward. I've also fitted 3 point...
I've looked into this myself. I ended up buying some slip on headrests from the scrap yard and re-covering them in vinyl of a similar color.
They look rubbish, but I only use them when I'm driving and I didn't have to cut into the seats in any way. It's part of my procedure, open door, slip on...
You don't have to but it's good practice to have the weight of the car off the ground especially when tightening them, otherwise the threads are lifting the front end weight of the car. I think the stress on the threads is less when loosening them, as gravity is with you, but I still have a jack...
Nice to have such a choice (including all the others you have).
Question: What's your order of preference for all your cars? Taking everything into account, looks, handling, performance, interior, sound etc, which one do you most enjoy driving/owning?
