Lol, I still have that pump as you see it. A swap deal came about way back where I didn't need to use it.
I use the "1 to 1-1/2 X the bolt diameter" for thread depth engagement.

DC use to sell a long pump rotor and plate kit. It came with 3" bolts and the 4-1/2". Those 3" were too long as well.
Interestingly, I recently purchased a HV pump from Mancini along with their recommended bolt set for the HV pump.
I received one 4-1/2" bolt and...
Caution, if you drill the crank too deep it's possible to break into an oil passage.
There is a Brewer's drawing out there which believe is shorter on the 2.225" depth than what I came up with on an auto crank I have.
The hole depth is plenty deep but the bushing diameter is...

FWIW, my '69 8-3/4 axle flanges (with 10 X 1-3/4 brakes) were too small diameter for press in studs. The 5 on 4" 7/16" holes were filled, then drilled and tapped for screw in 1/2-20s on the 4-1/2" BC...
