To answer your question I have never had one go bad from time. The only thing that will ruin them is hot sun shine and getting a magnet close to the tape. I have original Beatles tapes from 1964 that play like new.

Most times when that happened it was because the capstan was dirty. Same reason people used a match book under the tape. The old tape head cleaners didn't clean them very well. I use alcohol on a long Q-tip. I think I may have lost one in the last few years and it was a very loose tape.

I agree I don't ever remember seeing a 68 console lid with black in the grooves. I rode a lot of miles in my cousins 68 R/T when it was new. Don't remember any black on it. A silver a long the outer edges and chrome every were else.
I did a tan to black in an entire vet interior including the carpet. Used duplicolor. Worked very well for me. Like anything the key is a clean surface to start. I think besides the super clean there is also an adhesion premotor as well. Black is the easiest to do.
