I’m new to hemi’s and not sure what the 2 tubes are for. They run from the exhaust up above the flywheel area both connecting to the engine.

To remove the shifter. Prior to dropping the transmission. Even if you take the top of the console off it would be difficult to remove the hurst shifter.

Yep, got the transmission ready to come out. Quite a chore with the console having to come out first. I’m also due to put in a new clutch while it’s apart.

Tried to start it and starter wouldn’t engage. I found the ring gear pushed back off the flywheel. I’m thinking the ring gear may have cracked.

I’ve not seen this before. Going to disassemble and see if I can understand what happened.

Thanks Fran, I’ve taken it apart and put it together a few times now. Pretty comfortable with it. Now to find the parts needed for a rebuild.

Everything I read makes me believe it’s a gear reduction starter. Would love to find a period correct direct drive starter but not having much luck. I plan to rebuild the removed starter as a spare. I’m pretty sure it needs a new starter drive and there’s no time like now to learn.
