My 68 8 3/4 sure grip 741 case used to wine like that...but only in a 10-15 mile per hour band around 50mph, and only with power applied. Let off the gas and it would quiet right up. Took out the gears, new clutches, set it all up...no change. The next season I dismantled it all again but put...
741, 3.23 suregrip. My gears were noisy. I reset everything and changed the clutches. No change. Finally decided to remove the front and rear bearings...reinstalled...the noise was gone.
Remove the bell housing cover for just short drive...will eliminate that issue for sure. Tightening it wont fix it....many of these covers are mismatched for the proper TC. If you still have the noise...then it is not this 100%.
A very impressive catch!
I double checked all the bolts. They were all tight. I took the cover and placed it on a flat piece of glass and massaged it perfectly straight. Re-installed and all is fine now. Now to find the correct plate!
Thanks to all who chimed in!
Sorry. Yes. With plate removed there is no sound.
i was able to get a skinny wrench up there and check the crankshaft bolts. They are not loose by no means.
Hey All,
Got a bit of an issue. 68 440 with 727.
I have a metal knocking noise from bellhousing area when stationary, in all gears, but foot on brake. Reading the past posts I decided to remove the bellhousing cover. As you can see…I have a witness mark that of course looks like from the flex...
I just went through this...one of the ujoints had a "stiff spot" in the rotation. I just replaced both and it was gone. I used spicer ujoints. Replace both and it is quick and easy and fairly cheap and it would rule it out.
Something to think about...you had said that your suregrip is not...
Hey All,
Does the C clips go on the u-joint where it is mounted to the Pinion Flange? Ie where the 2 clamps clamp to the ujoint?
if so is the C opening out-facing or in-facing?
thanks

It will come off. Drain antifreeze like mentioned above. If it’s nice and pretty under the hood use a thin cloth or towel between it and the fender. Very thin…there are just millimetres to spare to get it out. You will have to manoeuvre it around a bit till it finds the magic orientation to...
Plasti-dip. I sometimes find it’s too thick. So I take some out in a separate small container and thin with a few drops of acetone. Then do multiple dips until it is thickness you want…or thick enough so that the wires will get slightly nipped.
Good Day,
Happened to discover the markings on my driveshaft on the tube. The part number 2852162 is self explanatory…as is the DCPC symbol.
What is the D8 and what looks to be a “BL” maybe??
Anyone have insight?
thanks
