Since the new fuse has the signals working, that indicates that if there is a problem, it is intermittent. So, obviously, The only way to see if it is an ongoing problem is to wait and see if the fuse blows again
I would say then that the most obvious answers would be either you are not getting power to the turn signal switch, or the turn signal switch is bad. So I would think the first logical step would be to find out if the turn signal Switch is being supplied with power
The smoke from the ts almost surely is a short to ground. If you unplug the connector under the kick panel, take out all bulbs and do continuity check between each of the wires going to the stop/turn bulbs and ground (tthe frame) you should not show any continuity. If you do, that wire is...
That is the exact situation I had when I replaced my turn signal switch. After instituting the fix I describe, It now functions normally by manually canceling, or self canceling

Is it a replacement switch? I put in a replacement switch and I could not manually cancel the turn signal. When I used the signal making a turn it self canceled perfectly.I figured out a fix And it is all explained in a different post.
