You are not wrong on that. If the EFI is controlling timing the dist needs to be locked out and let the EFI map out timing advance. The EFI does not have to control timing, in that case the dist must retain full mech and vac function.

Dexcool got a bad rap, gelling up and clogging the works. I remember reading that it must be kept away from oxygen, GM used a closed cooling system from the factory. Is all that true or not? I dont know. I would be cautious using Dexcool in an old car. The system is not sealed.

Now what about adding aluminum to the mix? Back when green coolant was the norm the manufacturers were not using aluminum radiators, heads, water pump hardware, intakes. They switched coolants when aluminum was used from the factory.

I went to Walmart to get some distilled water and coolant, 1 stop shopping. (picked up some ammo too while there) All they had was "all makes and models" coolant, and some GM Dexcool. Nothing that said OAT or HOAT.
