If your friend couldn't provide you with any specs on the engine then...
While the engine is still out of the car, I'd tear it down enough to see if it's been built at all(bored, stroked, cam, etc.)
It's advantageous to know what you're working with later on when making adjustments or changes...
Steve, if you're up to crawling on your back when this happens next time, get under it and tap on the starter with a hammer or the like. If it cranks after that I'd say starter's your culprit.
Like the guys said here Dave, check the side penetration seals for leaking first before dropping the pan again. Spray the housing down with some brake cleaner (or similar) and verify where the leak is coming from.
Only after that’s confirmed to be leak free, drop the pan and verify it’s flat...
I'd put a pan of some sort over the wet spot on the floor. That'll tell you if it's coming "up from the floor" or "dripping from the car". If the fluid seems to be evaporating then it's not a fluid that goes in the engine, drivetrain, or brake system. Unless you have straight water in the...
I got a factory idiot oil light so I installed an aftermarket gauge cluster (Volts/Temp/Oil). Had a scare last year with an engine noise I thought could be deadly. Wound up being something simple. I watch my oil pressure more often these days as a result.
I have no tach so my two most important...
I'm with @Jerry Hall in checking everything you can on any vehicle that's new to you.
How did the oil look when you changed it? Did it look like it had been neglected? That can be an indicator of how well the former owner cared for/maintained the engine and drive train items. Or the entire...
When you refill the radiator after the thermostat replacement, run the engine with the radiator cap off. When the thermostat opens the coolant level will drop in the radiator and then you can top it off to within an inch or two from the top if you don't have an overflow jug. If you do have an...
Do you have a mechanical fuel pump? Similar noise as you describe on my 383 wound up being the mechanical fuel pump was coming apart. Found it using a cheap mechanic stethoscope from Harbor Freight. Was very happy I found it before tearing too far into the top end.
This is the one I use. I bought mine off Amazon a few years ago though, not Summit. Good if you do a lot of your repairs and diagnosing solo.
