My guess based on your response is that it was all intact and you tore into it anyway. Whatever. Glad you got it all out of there. Sounds like it will be a top notch resto.
Going the extra mile always pays off.
AMD was making bumpers 50 years ago?
I think you're missing the point kent.
We are talking about the quality of the repop bumpers. I have originals as well, hence my statement.
Since you obviously have not had to purchase a repop bumper lately you really don't have a valid opinion.
I...
Who said anything about half ***? You never mentioned what kind of shape it was in to begin with. If it was all intact, you f@cked up by tearing into it. If it was just cracked, you could have skim coated, prep and painted as Elk says. If it was all chunked up and coming apart then you're doing...
Certainly much better than the Chinese are cranking out these days. Keep kidding yourself about acceptability. Not to mention the repops are not true triple chromed like the originals.
Let me know if you want some pics.
All after market bumpers have flaws. They can't compare to the old fashioned method of straightening and re-chroming the correct way. It used to cost $200 a bumper here in the US back in the "day" to have them re-done correctly.
The environmental activists have pretty much shut the old school...
I blew this off for years on my old Ram until it got to this point. The passenger side was worse. Dry Colorado I thought. Stupid me. Lots of work to fix. Nip it in the butt now Rob.
My guess is that it isn't that bad yet. Best to strip that area down in small portions and check it out.
Plenty of rust inhibiting products out there to stop it. Matching the paint shouldn't be too hard especially that low on the panel.
Good thing you caught it this soon like any form of cancer.
Did I mention that hard core body work like rot repair sucks *** to do? :drinks:
Never bitch about what body shops charge to do this ****. Labor intensive.
I have been cursed with knowing how to do it unfortunately. My son's 72 Duster. Not perfect by any means but good enough for a 16 year old...
I recently fixed the rot on my old 98 Ram. Not show quality but better than rot holes you could stick your fist through. The first mud hole I hit made the paint match perfectly. $40 patch panels per side. Had to fabricate the lower door frame patches.
When all you have is a hammer, everything is...
Based on the pics that inner fender should be just fine. I had a similar mishap many years ago on my 68 because I was looking at a chicks @ss and not watching where I was going.
Destroyed the fender but everything else was just fine. Recently rebuilt the whole car, that side was great...
The body panel alignment on our cars always sucked from day one. Cheap affordable cars for the masses.
Get 'er as close as you can and roll with it. God knows I have spent waaaay to much time trying to get the panels perfect.
Wanted to go with Top Cats when I did mine but they were out of stock everywhere.
Ended up going with Repops and they worked out just fine.
Either should work well.
