I'm familiar with casting flash. If my eyes aren't deceiving me there is a crack just to the left of the damaged piston in his second image. To me it looks like a crack right where the casting flash is. Look very carefully and tell me what you think.
That thing on the side of your block appears to be an expandable casting plug. Something one might use to replace a rusty (leaky) original style plug. There is a better adjustable plug available than the rubber ones. I can post a photo if you'd like.
But the plug isn't causing the other...
I know this won't answer your questions but FWIW next time I change the filter in my Super Bee's 727 I plan to install this. Picked it up last year and it seems to me the cooling fins could possibly help in cooling the transmission fluid.

This 318 short block, the magnum heads and intake were part of a recent acquisition. This is what I know; the short block was Remanufactured by Chrysler in Canada. (I'm quite sure that the block has not been decked). The heads appear to have been fully redone including surfacing of both block...
The thing is I'm not using a Magnum block.
The holes of the intake and heads line up quite well so I'm thinking the machine work (surfacing) is probably okay.
I don't really want to go with thicker head gaskets, but I do think I'll try a different type of head gasket and intake gasket set and...
