One thing to consider when running a large solid roller on the street is, spring pressure and keeping lash in check. The last thing you want it hardened needle bearing going through your motor if a lifter fails. That's a really bad thing.
I'm pulling a large solid roller I've had in my car for...
Some motors like more initial timing, you can limit the total if needed. If the carb has been rebuilt, the secondary spring may be loose or was never adjusted. Most off idle to WOT bog is caused by a lean spot. Can be accel pump, the sec spring tension or both. Overall jetting will also have an...
Vacuum will add a lot of advance, hence why you set initial and total without vacuum connected.
Somewhere (and I say somewhere) between 30-40 deg total (without vac adv) is where most motors like to run. My street car is set at 36 deg. My 13.5:1 race motor is locked at 30 deg. Much depends on...
Also, generally to run a solid roller you will need to machine the spring seat for a larger dia spring, longer valves for more installed height, new pushrods for correct length etc.
Ditto on above. We started a '63 Vette that sat for 10+ years once. Pulled plugs, squirted oil in bore. All we did was put some fresh gas in tank and carb. Car fired right up.
Just my $.02 but it has been my experience that a tunnel ram (properly jetted) makes more HP and TQ, even at lower RPM than most single planes I tried. Not just at high RPM.
Of course, depending on the type and mfg of tunnel ram. That being said, they can make for a fantastic street and strip...
A spool is needed at a certain HP/TQ level, however. Good buddy of mine is a chassis/rear end builder and when I went to a 700HP motor, he said my posi would not last a month. He was wrong, it lasted only 1 week!
Went to a spool and never had a problem since. They are not for daily street cars...
I drive one of my cars on the street w/ a spool and have for years. I have with both slicks and street tires. Street tires are going to be more forgiving on parts. However, I don't think you will have any issues as long as you use a good spool and aftermarket axles, such as Moser, Williams etc.
