Get them blasted really well and go with the Eastwood manifold paint, I have been using that stuff for over 25yrs and it really holds up well. And if you start to get a spot that is a little rusty you can use some sand paper and clean it up again then just brush on a little more manifold paint.
I've always removed mine and then used a nut and bolt with some RTV around it to seal each side. But as mentioned if you want it to look somewhat correct then remove the internal flap and then just tack the outside mechanism in the "open" position.
I'll recommend the HP manifolds, I've never liked the look or sound of headers and really don't care how much HP my motor makes as long as it runs and performs well then I'm happy.
Heck the 440 in my wagon has 100K++ miles and the compression across the cylinder varies from 90lbs to 140lbs...

My wagon has good tight exhaust but still gets a bit of exhaust fumes in around the back gate and glass...old seals that are obsolete now. I find if I crack the back glass about an inch and then open one of the floor vents a tad it will pressurize the interior of the wagon and keep the fumes...
Thing with aluminized pipes is they generally have a what I call a corrosion strip in them, might be from the manufacturing process but it starts to rust quick and easy and will then take out your exhaust pipes in short order. I had custom 2.5" pipes bent up for my 68 T/C wagon over 10 years...
When doing your exhaust systems make sure to use SS band clamps, to the cheap U-clamps. Allows you to dismantle and remove your system down the road with ease. I've been using these clamps for at least 15 years and could never go back to the other style....just ruins your pipes and connections.
I went through the exhaust manifold gasket leaks every few months, 1000 miles decades ago...got old really fast! I tried every type of gasket I could find and although some did work well they always started leaking, most within 18 months. Then I switched to high temp RTV on either side of the...
