Those pieces are all rivetted on so replicating that can be tough. A few years back when rebuilding mine I was looking for a replacement. There were guys out there thinking they were made of gold and then there were those who were much more reasonable. While I didn't end up buying one, I have...
Having "bin there and dun that" I would never have a car without a heater. A heater is more than just a heater, its also a defroster ... which comes in handy when the windshield fogs up in the cool mornings or evenings or, heaven forbid, you're caught in a surprise downpour.
Well there's more than just that to it ...
If they smoothed the firewall, did they also get rid of the small bulge for the blower motor? If so, then you'll need to do a bit more work to get a stock heater box to fit. See attached.
Take that off to fit your heater box. It is not for a "heater delete" - those used the same box as the left side with a couple mods and a different grill and did not need anything extra to attach it.
Here's are some shots of mine from a '69 B-body. This is a shot of the original - before resto. I didn't take any "after" shots but I suspect mine had enough material to reuse. I don't think that particular gasket is part of the kit. Maybe call one of the heater restorers and ask if they'll sell...
You may not "buy it" but its a fact! Once the coolant is up to temp you want it moving slow enough to give off the heat. Otherwise it just keeps getting hotter until something finally blows from the pressure.
What do you expect a shop to do that you can't do yourself ??? They'll take it apart and clean the armature - easily done with emery cloth. If its gouged they'll turn it down on a lathe - you can do it with an electric drill and a file. Bushings will get cleaned and greased - think you can...
If the fan was pressed on too far the motor won't be able to spin. If you have power on and try to connect to the resistor you should expect a spark - this happens to all sorts of things when you're completing a circuit. Its like jumper wire sparking when you try to boost another battery. My...
Heater core: RockAuto $65. Canadian
Blower motor: RockAuto $38. Canadian
You could even the guts out of the new blower motor and put them in your motor housing - after you're stripped it and painted it.
Beats the hell out of paying $300 U.S. for the sole satisfaction of "being original"...
