I would hold off on the pump for now. Change your oil, don't warm up, take long enough trips to get the temp up and check your spark plugs. I think its a combination of your short warm-ups, choke and could be running a bit rich.
How far North? National Moparts is up that way. They will know engine builders. If you now go with a 750 you'll always wonder if its too small. Like many suggested an 850 is best.
In the spring after winter storage, the carb bowls are bone dry. It seems to take forever to start the engine. I've contemplated going to an electric pump but is this all I need? Does this priming pump get installed before or after the mech pump? Sounds like a good idea.
Imo that will work just fine. Buddy of mine had a stock 340 with a 750 dp on it, ran fine. He traded it for a 650 vac sec and ran good too. So a 600 on a 318 is perfect.
My EFI problems sound very similar. I converted my 71 Cuda from carb to Edelbrock Gen 1 EFI with their version on the sump kit for the under-hood electric fuel pump. Late last fall the sump failed and I was towed home (tow of shame). The broken down cuda still sits in my garage. I'm...
Holley 750 4160 vac. secondary. With electric choke or w/o. Same price. Summit gives free delivery to us Canadians if over a certain amount. Taxes and duties extra. total $454 US$. or $515 Can $ + tax from Performance Improvements Canada...
I always end up regretting saving money on the cheaper one. Most people don't have that issue but I'm a sucker for anything upgraded or better.
Mind you I use to get the cheaper everything when I was younger and had less finances. My time for saving has ended.
Seems you have other linkage issues that a carb or FI won't fix.
I agree that a crappy carb doesn't self-heal. I have fuel injection on my 71 Cuda and a holley carb on the Cordoba. My experience so far...
After fighting with the carb on the Doba for years I replaced it with a new carb...
I once had a gas smell and found one of the fittings on the fuel pump had a small leak, not enough for any dripping on floor. It was always wet around the fitting. Fixed that and no more issues.
I used the Felpro valley pan, had it powder coated (not the gasket area), and installed. I only have around 400 kms on it so far and no leaks. I have aluminum heads and aluminum intake.
I use to paint the VP but it never stayed sharp. Hoping this will last longer.
