hi guys! after months of searching, original 10x2 drum and 1x3/4 shoes are non existing on this planet anymore and i've decided to swap to 10x2.5 everything from the drum to backing plate,

has anyone swapped the whole assembly before and can give me some tips and tricks for the job?

this is for the rear of my 66 belvedere slant six sedan manual brakes,

does the rear axle have to be pulled out in order to remove backing plate? and crack open the diff cover?

Thank you so much for the help in advance!

Yes the axles need to come out to replace the backing plates. Which rear do you have? Need to remove the diff cover and C-clips on everything except the 8.75.

The axles are retained externally just like the 8-3/4" axle. There is no need to remove the differential cover, but the axles will have to be removed. Is it necessary to change the backing plates to use the wider shoes?

Let me correct myself. The 7.25 does not have the axle C-clips and removal of the cover is not required. The 8.25 does have the C-clips and removal of the cover is required.
Yes need different backing plates for 10.5" versa 10"

Yes and so does NAPA, etc but it's the drums, 10x2 that match is impossible to find. used are too far gone and new old stocks...in my opinion too expensive might as well swap it for a common set for the money.

i sure wish i don't have to pull the shaft out and crack open the differential!

Sorry , my bad, I thought you only needed the shoes.

I went through this very same thing many years ago. My shoes were grooved pretty bad and couldn't find any and wasn't ready to swap in an 8 3/4 so I cut my own drums (I'm a machinist) since it was going to take more than an auto parts house would cut. .100" later and they still were not cleaned up but were much better than they were. Ran em that way for a year then found an 8 3/4 and stuck it in with a set of 4.10 gears. Woke up that anemic leaning tower of no power!! Went from a 19.60 to an 18.10 at the track :D
