Hi I was thinking about buying an 8 3/4 rear end of a 64 polara. I believe it's condsidered a b body and want it for a b body 68-70 charger but wanted to know if it would fit. Would it fit a 68-70 b body to bolt right on or would I have to make modifications to it? It's being sold for $250 so would be worth it since I have a suregrip case I could drop in it.

64 b body 8 3/4 measured 60 7/8" drum to drum 68-70 b body measured 60 1/8" drum to drum, safe to use

Maybe not important to you, but is to most folks--64 is tapered axle and most change them to 65 and later. I have two complete 64 third members and would sell them both for $100.. Make a deal--$75............................MO

What's a tapered axle? Sorry I don't know much when it comes to rear ends. I have extra third members. So I don't need those

I would recommend that you not purchase the tapered axle rear end ... unless you are restoring a vehicle that had one originally and want to make it correct. You should be easily able to find a "normal" B-body rear end.

There was a great article on wikipedia written by the Crankshaft Coalition about the tapered axle brake conversion but it appears to have been deleted in December of last year.

It's still here. (Wrong link, let me try again) Yep it's deleted! Crap... Here's some measurements anyway.

The axel housing will bolt up but useing the tapered axles you'll have to use a hub puller to remove the drums for brake work. There is a fix for that too but I would go for a newer housing, jmo.

Is there a reason you couldn't swap tapered axles for flanged axles? Are the backing plates different?

Certainly not a bolt in axle swap. I have heard that it has been done, but involves much more work than just replacing the whole third member. The differential itself can be swapped between the tapered axles and the flange axle, but involves using the correct parts. ( axle end play etc.) I can't remember if the brake backing plates and brake componets can be swapped between the two housings.....................MO

Flange axles of the correct length will work. They have to be used with "green style" bearings. Though an inner axle seal will physically fit, the housing isn't bored deep enough to acomadate a seal and the standard bearing. The "green" bearing doesn't require a seal. The 64 housing is narrower as well.

I have heard many bad experiences with the "Green Bearings" , but understand that the newest ones have cured their problems.....................MO

8 3/4 are interchangeable in terms of bolting up from mid 50s up to 72 I think. I have one out of a late 50s dodge truck and it works fine in my 67 coronet housing. Axles on the other hand, as the guys mentioned, are a different story. Make sure your rear end is strong enough for your power as well. 741 are ok for lower power but if your are in the 500-600+ hp range id make sure you have a 742 or 489.

I've used them for years never an issue.

You will see a big Ol' nut on the end of axle. Looks like a front spindle with out the dust cap.

Just remember, the early housing's lived behind max wedges and Hemi's.

Never seen or heard of that, but I suppose it could be true.

That has been the mystery. Some have got along fine, and others say they would not last and would never use them again. Why is there such a widespread difference of opinion, and why has there been recent changes in design ? ........................MO
