This is an original 1967-1968 Mopar 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. This transmission is actually a bit more than that, it was built by Mopar specifically to mount behind 426 Hemi models. That's right, this is a 426 Hemi specific 727 Torqueflite trans! The numbers stamped in the pan mounting rail are as follows: J2801544 3431270. The J2801544 stamping codes as follows: J : Production Plant Lynch Road, Detroit Michigan. I'm not sure what the 3431270 numbers mean. There is also a partial VIN stamping in the upper bellhousing flange that reads 8A179110 as shown. The VIN shows that this is a 1968 model year transmission. This is a real deal 1968 426 Hemi 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission.
This transmission was recently found at an estate cleanout and was carefully stashed under a workbench in the garage. There was a rumor in the neighborhood that the owner of this house originally had a HEMI car but it was never verified. The trans looks quite clean but I don't have any history so I'm selling as a non working core for rebuilding. I did pull the pan and found nice transmisison fluid that is not burned. There is some light debris in the pan but it does not appear to be clutch material etc, but more likely trash that has entered the open orifices after decades of being under a bench in a garage. The trans looks very nice overall with the only damage I can see being a small split in what I believe is the starter snout support and one of the lower service tabs being broken off as shown. This is an awesome real deal 426 Torqueflite trans. When these cars were not worth as much, I imagine many of us would have rolled the dice and installed this trans as is. That said, today, it would be wise to have this transmission rebuilt before installation for piece if mind. With the rebuilding in mind, I have priced this transmission at near half the price of the only other one I could find listed for sale here on ebay. Don't miss this REAL DEAL 426 Hemi 727 Torqueflite trans.
