I know the 1967 GTX only came with a 440, but were there more than one version of the 440?

In 1967, only one 440 was offered. It was a good piece. 915 close chambered heads,
warm hydraulic cam, hi flo cast iron exhaust manifolds. rated 375 H.P. 4 speed cars had
dana rear ends. T-flites had 8 3/4. I bought one from the original owner in 1969 and still have it. I built another one into a strip/street monster.

Thanks for the help! 915 heads only offered in 67?

Yes, just 1967 but they can be found.

67 gTx also came with the 426 if ordered that way...it was a 375 hp 440 that was the base engine...Yep the closed chamber 915 heads were hard to beat...
Petty Blue 67 GTX

Actually the 915 heads were also found on 66 cars but that was on big Chryslers and they had the 1.6" exhaust valve. I have even seen a set of 915's on a 66 383. Must have been out of 516's that day.

whats the difference between the 915's and the 516's?

The important difference is the 516 has a flat intake port floor and the 915 has a more contoured short side radius. It is believed this contour helps the AF mixture make the bend in a more streamlined fashion thereby improving wet flow. Even if the flow bench numbers are similar to the other BB heads I believe there is some magic going on with the port shape of the 915. The 906 has the same port design as the 915 with the obvious difference being the chamber.

These are 915's

Ok - what about 1969 440's then?

How many different kinds were there?

(Not to hijack the thread, but I was wondering....)

In the thread "engine colors" at the top of the forum it lists two 1967 440 motors if only one was offered in the GTX what did the other one go in? By the way I am new to the site and just trying to learn before I make the leap into a classic B body and you people are great!!! The info is awsome!!!!!!

I am pretty sure that the 69 440's used 906 heads. The 906 head has been used an alot of engines and as far as I know there wasn't a HP head made in the 906 series.

"Over the years, confusion and mythology arose around the 915 casting, and it mistakenly became known as the 1967 440 Magnum head. This same head was also found on all 440s in 1967--from your old man’s 440 New Yorker to the boss’s 440 Imperial. The only difference was the smaller exhaust valve in the non-Magnum engines. A throat cut and the bigger exhaust valve evened the score."

906's were used on all big blocks from 68-70. 516's and 915's have the same chamber shape. Factory 1.74" ex valve 915's were stamped HP on the ends where the accessory holes are and typically were found on GTX's and R/T Coronets.

In 67 IIRC L VIN code is HP 440 and K is LP 440 like in Chryslers.

Not true.

There were two versions of the 440 in 1967. The 350 h.p. used in the C bodies and the 375 h.p. used in the B body hipo cars.
