Good Afternoon Mopar Enthusiasts,

I found this GTX. It was restored in 2008 and supposedly numbers matching. The certicard is with the car but I do not believe the Build Sheet is. The car is located in the midwest so I would have to fly out and then ship back, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth the trip. The price I got out of them was $25,300. Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is what I think I found out about the Fender Tag...

Looks nice, but hard to tell unless you see it in person. Take a magnet! Would like to see undercarriage shots. Not a fan of cutting the dash to add gauges that could have just as well gone under dash. Looks like originally an A/C car with A/C removed since A/C vent in center of dash. It even seems like the push button A/C control has been swapped out for a non A/C control. Not sure what those radio knobs came off of.

I liked the Bronze one you found on Craigslist better.

Take your time. A 30K budget should buy you a really nice car without compromises.

Thanks for the advice. How do I determine which cars are better than others for that price range? Both of those cars look good to me. I also like that bronze one, but I would like to find a car from the middle of the USA over to the West Coast to reduce shipping costs. What gauges on the Copper GTX were installed? Thanks for the opinions.

Sean

The three gauges in the dash above the AC vents are aftermarket and someone would've had to have carved holes in the dash to install them like that. You could find a another dash but I believe you have to remove the windshield to install it. Also, the wheels aren't correct for that year. The wheels should be like the black car's in this thread with no trim rings. All little stuff but the main thing is to make sure there is no rust in the quarters as they still don't make full quarters for '66-'67 B-bodies and the partial patch panels for the lower quarters they make are the wrong shape compared to stock. The aftermarket ones are flat where they should be a little convex.

The car has an AC firewall, it was originally an AC car.

Price is a little high from what i see. The car looks nice in the photos, but for mid twenties, i'd expect to see a little neater engine bay (wiper motor, master cylinder, washer bottle....). The dash is a real bummer. And yes, the windshield would need to come out. To me, that'd be a big bargaining chip when talking price. If it was below 20k, i'd take a closer look. As always, magnet and look very closely at frame rails, floor pans, etc.

Thank you very much for the help guys. I just spoke with the owners and from what they said, there are photos and documents of the restoration. They have the parts to convert back to AC, and there is Old dash with gauges that goes with the car. The car has all the right vins and date codes on the parts, and the car doesnt appear to have had any panels replaced, and the bottom has been painted gloss black. The radio does not work as well.

Seems like from what you guys are saying, the price is a bit high for this car and I should keep shopping around? Flying down costs about $400 and to ship would be another $1k. Seems like they are pretty firm at $25,300.

Restored means a lot of different things to different people. Maybe a nut and bolt rotisserie. Maybe stripped to metal, all and bondo removed before repaint. Maybe just new bondo on the rust bubbles and a repaint. A complete restoration usually involves new wiring harness, interior seat foam and springs as well as seat covers/door panels, etc. All lights, gauges, speedo, wipers, etc should work. If someone has been driving the car with a lot of obviously non-working components, that says a lot about their maintenance of the rest of the car. All A/C parts are there means everything would need to be rebuilt and reinstalled. If all a car with non-working A/C needed was Freon, the seller would recharge it before selling. If the radio was just a lose wire or fuse, the seller would have fixed that themselves. Never take anything not working at the time of purchase to be a simple fix. You can spend a ton on these cars just in rechroming pitted parts, particularly the exterior emblems, taillight bezels, sail panel chrome, hood lover bezels, etc.

Replacement quarter panels are not available. Same with door skins, front fenders, outer wheelhouses etc. Lots more parts available for 68 and up due to much higher production numbers.

Did you look at the one in the classifieds for 25K?

I did take a look at that one. Very nice looking car but located a little further then what I wanted to have to pay for shipping from coast to coast. And I would like to stay as close to original/ numbers matching as possible.
