1968 4-speed Hemi Charger R/T
25,972 miles. This vehicle was driven by the original owner for a few years and parked until 1984 when the 2nd owner bought it. For the next 20 years, the car sat and in 2004 he disassembled the car and started a restoration. He got as far as having the body work done and the car painted (base/clear coat) but he lost ambition and he stored it in an inflatable sealed car cover for several more years. I am the 3rd owner having bought the car in thousands of pieces in August 2012.
This car still wears its original sheetmetal, and with the exception of some rust holes in the lower portion of the rear window channel, there was never any other rust, rot or major dents. This car has been in Massachusetts its whole life and has been under wraps until I put it back together and got it drivable in the summer of 2013.
Matching body numbers and matching engine & transmission. Build sheet and fender tag. A repro fender tag is on the car, but the original is included (pitted from battery corrosion).
Only 211 4-speed Hemi Chargers were built in 1968 and this heavily optioned car includes:
MM1 bronze poly paint
Black vinyl roof
Black interior
Black tail stripe
426 Hemi
4-speed 833 transmission
3:54 Dana rear axle
Rear defogger
F70-15 redline tires with steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps
Power brakes
Front disc brakes, 10” rear drums
Power steering
Power windows
Console
Light package (ignition, trunk, glove box, map & ash tray lights)
Hood turn signals
Tinted windshield
Dual headrests
LH remote mirror
RH manual mirror
Locking gas cap
Bucket seats
Standard steering wheel
Tach/clock
3 speed wipers (std on Hemi)
Radio delete
Build date: 6/12/68
This car still wears the following original pieces that were on it when it left the factory:
Carbs, distributor (with factory tags), starter, alternator, radiator, fuel pump, ps pump & gearbox, wiper motor, H-pipe, springs, torsion bars, (date coded) one-piece resonator/tailpipes, original (date coded) wheels. With the exception of carpet and headliner, the rest of the interior is factory original. Grille & stainless are original. Some repro chrome trim, but most is original.
Some original factory parts go with the car which includes the original 1968 shocks, battery cables, fuel lines, air filer and some (pitted) chrome trim.
For driveability, modern redline radials are on the car and one original bias ply redline tire is on the spare in the trunk.
I have pictures of the car showing the body with its original paint after disassembly in 2004 and during my assembly process. Engine professionally rebuilt by Hemi Haines and included are hundreds of pictures detailing the engine rebuilding and dyno run.
Only 211 built, 1968 4 speed Hemi Chargers were ever built and how many are left is anyone’s guess. The unusual options combined with the originality does make this vehicle exceptionally rare and I think that it is safe to say that this example is one-of-one.
I not a dealer; rather a life-long Charger enthusiast, and this car is my pride and joy. It truly is a stunningly beautiful example of a 1968 4-speed hemi Charger and I will be sad to see it go. Price reflects condition, rarity and originality. $149,900.00 or best offer.
