OK, I ordered an oil pan because mine was cracked. When we went to install it, we discovered it's about 1 inch to shallow. The oil pick has a different shape but is the same length. I got the oil pan kit from Jim's. Does anyone know if there were two or more different oil pans on the 440 motors?

If stock, I believe you should have a 402 pan and your pickup should be the round type with a screen. Maybe the pan and pickup on your motor were changed at some point. If the old pan is 1" deeper, I think it would be a 7 qt pan, but the pickup being the same length confuses me. Sounds like a mismatch of parts to me. Get the proper pickup and pan combination. Does the new pan and pickup fit ok or are there fitment issues and this is only a question?

The pan is a 402 stamped right on the pan and yes the pickup is a round type with a screen. Guess I'll call Jim's.

The pan will not fit with the old or new pickup. The pick ups are the same length when installed.

Additionally there are two seals and a plate between the block and the pan. :-(

OK, the 402 pan did not work for 1970 440 motor. 1/2 inch to shallow. I going with the 440/426 Hemi 7 qt pan.

What you probably have is an oil pan with a windage tray. These came from the factory with the HP engines but not the low performance engines, or ordered aftermarket. I believe that the prior owner or owners put a different pan and pickup on it at some point and maybe added the windage tray. If you are buying a new pan, get the pan with a matching pickup as a kit. The new pickup may have a different shape but will match the pan. Make sure to put the windage tray back on as it keeps the oil from splashing on the crankshaft and foaming, and is worth a few more horsepower. By the way you will need 2 pan gaskets with the windage tray. Good luck in getting this sorted out.

With the "correct " pickup any 440 pan will fit any 440 block !!!!!!!!!
