I'm looking for info on what would be the correct color to refinish the Air Grabber box on my 70 GTX after I repair some scrapes and scratches that are visible when the hood is open.

I've seen a dark walnut used on 69 air boxes that looked pretty good. My air box looks a lot more gray than brown, but after 55 years, I'm sure it's faded some from the heat and age, even though it's been sitting in my shop for 20 of those 55 years.

Were the 69 and 70 boxes made from the same material and started out with more of a brown tint, or were the 70 boxes more of a charcoal gray?

70 boxes are Orange.. on Dodges anyhow. Maybe the GTX in 70 was an oddball, as Roadrunners got an entirely different air cleaner in 70.

Check out this 1970 Plymouth GTX 440 Six Pack 4 Spd in...pink, oh yes, PINK!

Here is an original. A 70 Gtx/Road Runner uses nothing like a Dodge…

That's the part. More gray with a very slight brownish tint in the sunlight. I had thought about blasting it with some walnut shell media, but I don't think that would blend in the discoloration of the scratches. Glass might really make a mess of it. I might have to take it to the paint store and see if they can mix up a rattle can to match.

I couldn't tell you how to restore it but maybe someone here can... Similar to heater box restoration.

The air grabber box is a medium charcoal gray, but not a consistent colour that you can recreate with paint. It is made of molded fiberglass reinforced plastic, and shows little whitish/light gray threads of glass against the darker gray. Once cleaned up, you could try some satin clear, which would also cover scratch marks. This is a colour picture, taken in daylight without flash.
