OK I love the overall look of the factory 4 speed bench seat shifter in my 70 Roadrunner, I just don't like how huge it is and how long of a throw it has.

Has anyone either a) installed a 71-74 bench seat shifter in their 70 to see if its any better? or b) fabricate their own handle? I'm not just talking about the wood portion, the entire handle? I'd love to see pics if anyone did something cool.

I'm thinking about making one that just fits me better. I've done it with other cars in the past. I won't hack up the original shifter, that's just not smart.

that's a tough one, best thing i can think it make a template that works with your seat position! I had a supershifter in my 66 with buckets and had to look through steering wheel grabbing 1st or 3rd, fast but not comfortable! My 69 runner i had the long hurst bar with 3" offset towards driver, worked good for center passenger getting it moved over a bit , but still shifted like a truck! Don't know if you can see it in this pic.

I’d think of the gs Tory engineered it it would be fine using the stock set up

First thing I'd do is make sure all the bushings in the linkages are all up to snuff, the shifter box is adjusted per the factory service manual, and all bolts are tightened to spec......then see if that makes a difference.

Sloppy pistol-grips are usually a sign the linkages are worn and the shifter box needs adjusting.

Everything is brand new and it has the solid bushings. It's just a long throw in general. It works fine, I just would like to modify it a bit.

Your easiest option is to sell the car to me very cheaply. I LOVE my knucklebuster !!

Maybe modify the linkage itself by drilling holes higher up on each shift lever? You’d have to double check that you have enough threads on the shifter rods & possible extend the threads further on them (?)

If it doesn't have to be a pistol grip other handles are out there.

I went from a 64-70 b-body long throw to a (difficult to find) 63 T10 handle.

Much better position and shorter throws.

Yup. Browse the swaps and throw a shorter handle in there from another Mopar of your choice.

Personally, I love the big throw. It makes me feel like I'm a purple monster in a Roth drawing.
