There is no rope used on '70 and newer vehicles. Here is a short article with fotos and sub-titles. The "butyl tape" mentioned in the article is what the factory began to use after the large rubbery gaskets were dis-continued. New cars use a super strong urethane sealer.

When I replaced the windshield on my '72 Satellite Sebring Plus, I was looking for the correct thickness butyl tape, but the glass shop insisted on using the new urethane sealer. That is a choice you will have to make. My urethane sealed windshield looks centered, does not leak, and has not fallen out yet.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies, so if I understand it correctly its the butyl tape method and then sealer is used around that, is that correct or was it just the tape in the day?? thanks again everyone

It looks like the shop in the video I posted used both, but back in the day the urethane was not available so I suppose it was only the butyl from the factory. My shop did not use the butyl at all, just the urethane by itself like the new cars have.
