I just started restoring a 1972 Charger and I am not sure what size rear end I have, it originally came with a 318 and a 727, I can see a serial number on the side of the housing, but I don't know if you can ID the rear end by that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ON the left side of the rear axle chunk where it bolts to the housing are a string of numbers. The last 3 numbers will be something like 741, 741 or 489. That will give you an idea of what rear axle center section you have.

As far as the axle ratio, look for a small metal tag under one of the attching bolts..... may say something like 3.23 2.94 or more than likely , a 2.76.

318 with 727 and 8.75 inch rear? I've never seen that combo in a 72 Charger from the factory, but anything is possible I guess. 318 cars normally came with a 904 trans and 8.25 inch rear. What are the first 5 characters of your VIN?

WH23G that's the first 5, how do you decode the vin? Is there a chart to refer to? I'm still rather new to the whole restoration thing, that's just what was on the car when i got a hold of it, the previous owner said that's what he pulled from it (the 318) and put in a 360, he said he never switched out the transmission or rear end, but from what I can see it's an 8 3/4, and when I had the transmission rebuilt they told me it was a 727.

It was common to have 318's,727's and 8 3/4 rears in the 60's....

hmm, well after some more checking and prodding I realize that it is indeed an 8 3/4 rear end, as to if it's stock I have no idea, build sheet is looong gone.

Just keep searching for a build sheet under carpet or on top of heater box. May get lucky.

hmm ok, I will check tomorrow and see if I can find anything, I'm new to all this so I had no clue as to where to look.
