I just read an article saying there are very few foreign tourists there, just 48 hours prior to the opening ceremonies.

That jives with what I thought was a very oddly deserted background on "The Today Show" this morning.

It's a sad state for the Olympics & many of the athletes, they'll be roughing it for a while, good for character building thou, only the strong will survive... I wonder if it was planned, to put competing countries in these adverse situations, to give Russia a shot at more Golds ??... I guess the water is the least of the problems... Sanitation is a big issue too... It's an embarrassment for the Russian dignitaries & Sochi Olympic community.. heads will roll, you can bet on that

Some report seeing malicious activity on their cell phones as soon as they power on in Russia. I hope everyone knows that when you go to Russia there is no privacy when it comes to their government. Hmmm, wait a minute, that sounds a lot like.....Damn that George Bush!!!

The Soviets, oops, Russians, have been running these scams for years, but once again we see the fallacy of centralized government and Socialized industry at work. My grandmother went to Russia in the 1970s and saw the same thing. She was in Moscow and saw all these beautiful new high-rise apartment buildings and said they looked great from the outside, but she would see people standing in line with buckets coming out the doors of them. Being the nosiest woman on Earth, she just had to find out why, and it turns out only the first floor of the buildings had water. Everyone living on the second floor and up had to get buckets and line up to to get their water from a common spigot and carry it back upstairs. I guess the water in her hotel room was clean, but she said when you went in the bathroom there were hoses running to the sink, shower, and toilet, and just one water inlet for hot and cold, so when you wanted to use the toilet, you had to connect the toilet to the cold water tap. When you wanted a shower, you had to connect the shower. When you needed the sink you had to connect that. Plus she brought home a roll of Russian toilet paper. It was like printer paper with a waxy surface... no wonder the Soviets were so ornery.

Everything in Russia is like the situation in Sochi because all they focus on is appearances. They lack the infrastructure or economic system to demand quality throughout any project, so they try to get by on making it look nice on the surface, but once you look a little deeper you see disasters galore.

Russian commentators are booing Americans and cheering their comrades.

I would suppose the only advantage to hosting an Olympics is to boost tourism. I don't think that will happen. Too bad, I feel sorry for the average Joe Schmo there. I think Putin has some good qualities I find lacking in our own president. Go Norway. My Grandfather was a ski jumper in Norway. I don't know if this is bad but sometimes I cheer for my race rather than my country.
