4 Speed Question

I have a friend who has a 71 Demon 340/4 speed. To put the car in reverse, he has to move the shifter to the left, push down on the Hurst shifter, and shift down into reverse. Normally every 833 I've seen is move shifter to the left and up. His goes 'down' into reverse. What would you think is causing this?
