I had a request for a picture of this EGR valve that I bought NOS on eBay. As far as I know it fits 1973-74 400 and 440 "high performance" (with 4 bbl carb) engines. It fit my engine perfectly. The mounting studs on the intake manifold are 2" apart (c-to-c) and in a plane perpendicular to the driveline. The valve mounts with the diaphragm port pointing FORWARD. As far as I know this valve will NOT fit a 2 bbl carb engine.

Hello, I believe that I was the member that requested a pic of your EGR. Thanks for posting. Yep that is definitely different than my 2bbl (see pic) #3870 635. The mounting studs on my intake manifold are 3-1/8" apart (c-to-c) on the EGR. This will make for great reference in the future.

You're welcome. I hope others can benefit from this. It's always nice to have part numbers and actual pictures of what parts are supposed to look like when fixing up these old cars.

73 and 74 EGR valves are not the same. May look alike but function differently.

How are they functionally different? All an EGR valve does is recirculate some of the exhaust gas back into the engine using a vacuum source to open and close the valve. I know there were several refinements over the years supposedly making the valves work better but they all did the same basic thing. I feel lucky to just find A valve for my engine as rare as these parts are getting. I figure IF - and that's a big IF - I have a '74 valve on my '73 engine then at least I'm not going backwards in design. It's better than having a plate over the hole like I had looks wise, although these old engines work fine with or without EGR.

Yea the block off plate looks cheesy as I had to do that one time.

I will see if I can locate the service bulletin and post it.
