My 62 Fury has taper axles and an open 3.23 pumpkin. Will I have any problems swaping in a 1967 pumpkin with an open gear, since the 67 has the flanged type axles ?

It won't work. The 1962 has a 1.25" wide thrust block inside the differential 1st photo
The 1967 has a 1.5" wide thrust block inside the differential 2nd photo

Need to cut .125 from each axle.

This is the same thing that needs to be done to put in a sure grip.

In 64, Chrysler went to a 1.5 inch thrust block in open diffs to match the length of the thrust buttons in the Sure-Grip.

I thought that was in 1965 when they dumped the tapered axles?

Apples and oranges.

Prior to 1964 the open thrust block was 1.25, and the Sure-Grip thrust buttons were 1.5.

1964 Chrysler changed the thrust block in the open differential to 1.5 which now matched the Sure-Grip.

So, in my 62 with an open differential I couldn't swap in a 64 and up open, or any Sure-Grip without trimming the axles or getting new ones.

If my 62 had a factory original Sure-Grip I could swap in anything, except a pre 64 open.

1964 was the last year of the tapered axle.

Doesn't matter if the axles are tapered or not, it's when the change in open differential thrust block size happened.

Thanks

Thanks, getting old have forgotten alot. Not what I wanted to hear. But somehow I though this would be what I would hear . I know were there is a 67 newport. Might grab the complete reaend, and swap it into my 62 wagon. I know it is wider than my 62 rearend. But under the wagon there is a lot of room to move out ward. It would be about 1 5/8" per side , But I have more room than that. I would just have to weld on new spring pearches ( which I have) Plus if I wanted I could run a wider tire.
