65 Coronet Heater Woes

I had a problem a couple of years ago with a leaking heater control valve...basically if you got anywhere close to the fun side of 3 grand, is would pi$$ on your right foot. So I pulled the heater box and worked on solving the problem. Since a convertible doesn't really need heat, I left it out for a while driving without a heater box.

Fast forward to Fall 2014...I had solved the leaking with a proper fitting o-ring and decided to put the box back in...it was ALOT harder to reinstall than I remember it was to remove! I hooked everything back up, confirmed that the valve is operating, that the hoses are in the right order, that the core is full, and the hoses are heating up but I have no heat. I haven't driven the car, but I did let it idle in the driveway for almost 1 hour.

Any thought on what the hell is going on? I'm stumped.
 
Back when I had my 65 coronet wagon, I had to replace the heater core as well. That in itself is not an easy thing to do as they don't make those off the shelf that I knew of. As you know they have a two piece design with the inlet that has the heat control built on it has to go in once the box is assembled. Once I got that replaced I reinstalled everything only to have the valve that you adjust the temperature with start to leak. It was not leaking at the o ring where it goes into the heater core but on the end. Now I have heard there is a company that can rebuild those valves. You might look over on the 62-65 mopar forum. I have also seen a few of those valves NOS for sale , but those are pretty pricey. What I did was take the inlet with the valve made on it off and out of the heater core. Took it to a radiator shop and cut that valve off the end and had a copper cap soldered on to it so it was just a 90 degree inlet now that went into the heater core with no valve. I cut the inlet heater hose under the hood and put a on/off valve in the hose under the hood and it worked great for what I needed. I was not overly concerned with it being completely original any way. Plus no more leaks.

Are both hoses heating up? If the input hose is significantly hotter than the output hose, you may have an air trap in the heater core. I've run into this problem. I solved it by loosening the output hose at the firewall. I then started the engine and slowly pulled the hose loose from the connection. If air is trapped, it should start bleeding out, and you can see a steady stream of water start coming from the heater. Slip the hose back on, and if the 2 hoses are close to the same temp, the heater should work, providing all the heater doors are adjusted properly.
