Hello. I just happened across this site and love mopars. I just got my first project car- a 65 satellite convertible. It needs quite a bit of work but the body & frame are solid. First thing is to take the 318 out of it and put in a bigger motor. I'm looking for a big block. Is the choice always a 440 or could I get 450-500hp out of a 383 more economically? There seem to a\be a lot of 383s around. Any thoughts?

Welcome. Cost of building a 383 and a 440 are about the same. Bout the only difference is the initial cost of the subject block

Welcome aboard. If your starting from scratch,it's the same price range for a 440 with more room to grow!

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking 440 too. Anybody know if any of the 65 satellite's came with posi traction?
Thanks.

welcome they sure did and all us moparnuts refer to a posi traction as a suregrip dont worry we will break you right and before you know it you will know all the mopar slang lots of knowledgable good folks here.

Welcome aboard moparquest..Like Hemi-itis said, ballpark in price-440 has room to grow.

Welcome to the site. Let's see some pics, we are all about car **** here. I have never heard of 383s being prone to smokeing unless they were poorly maintaned or reassembled improperly after a rebuild.

I do all the smokin',not the car:sleepy2:Back to startin' from scratch,I would look for MORE than 500hp.Depending on the budget,it's really not much more.Just do it right the first time, don't scrimp on parts, and if you have to wait a little to save to do it right than so be it.I had to sit out this past season to get my junk right, but now I will be huntin for an 8 second time slip with my "streeter":munky2:
