I know it's nothing out of the ordinary. But the power steering in my '67 Satellite is just too powerful! Driving down the road the other day at about 65 mph, I just didn't feel as "in control" as I would like to. The steering input is just so light. I feel like a sudden jerk, sneeze, or my dog, could send me off the road.
Sure, I can parallel park with only my pinky finger, but I would really prefer tighter steering.

I read an article in one of the Mopar magazines a while back about decreasing the output pressure of your p/s pump by adding washers to a pilot or check valve in the pump. It's a very simple thing to do but didn't seem to do much for me.

Any tips on "weakening" the steering? Or what modifications, if any, would I have to do to switch to manual steering?

ANY help would be much appreciated.
Thanks guys, Semper Fi!

I read somewhere about putting an adjustable valve inline somewhere to do the same thing, but make it easily adjustable.

Im looking into the same thing, and will probably go with a firmfeel.com rebuilt box.

I wonder if you could use a smaller crank pulley or a larger pump pulley? Sounds to me like the worm needs a little slack adjusted in to it. Is everything greased good to let it have a little play in the joints? Idler joint maybe not lubed and tight? Just thinking out loud.

the front end is all reasonably new. i really think it's just the way these cars were built. the valve is an interesting idea, and i'll give FirmFeel a look. Any other thoughts?

"Firm feel" is your ticket.
You can only do so much adjusting to the power steering gear unit. They were meant to feel feather light to the driver.

power steering reduction

I read that article in MOPAR action about adding a shim. I just did that on my '75 D100 truck, yesterday. Makes a difference. Added a .058" thick shim. It was very easy to do, from start to finish 30 minutes. The steering feel is still somewhat light, but I do have some resistance while driving down the road. I think this is important in a truck when there is a load in the bed. Wish I knew about the shim 35 years ago, I would have modded my '70 Cuda's "granny" steering.

Any firm feel box will bolt in your car. Allyou need is the coupler and pitman arm that goes with it. Reason in 73 the input shaft and out put shaft got bigger. Its a bolt in great swap.
