Looking into buying a 8 3/4 rear end that came out of a 69 B body. The guy says he thinks it will fit into any 68-72 B body. Measured mine in my car its 54 1/2 backing plate to backing plate his measures 53 1/2 is this a large enough difference to matter that much?

yes, as it will cause your leaf spring bushings to wear quicker and unevenly (thus causing excessive lateral movement at a later date). either relocate the spring perches to the OE width for the 72, do a spring relocation kit to the framerails, or find a 71-72 b body housing.

will it last for a little while.. yep... but definitely not a long term solution.

This doesnt make sense. I know for a fact the b rear is wider not narrower. There are mistakes on the my mopar chart

55" flange to flange is the shortest Bbody rear up to 67 or 68, then they were a little wider up to 72 then 73/4 were the widest I beleive and 74 had different mounting pads for the ISO shock plates.

As for the spring pads I'm not sure when the Bbody changed from 44". Regardless, if you do change the rear make sure you have the right perch width or move the perches so that they are right (good pinion angle too) and you wont have a problem with the spring bushings as previously mentioned.

I wouldnt measure backing plate to backing plate as that measurement may change depending on where your measuring to or from and may be different depending on being 10 or 11 inch backing plates as the back spacing may differ due to the shoe widths 1.75" vs 2.5"

Hope this helps, there are a number of websites with these dimentions but many are not very consistant in thier info. I'm sure someone will chime in with the dimentions for the later Bbody 8.75 tube dimentions for you here.

Good luck

I've found this chart to be quite accurite.
http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/axle/16.html
Housing widths, flange to flange
B BODY
'62-'63= 53 1/4" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 55 5/8" (Exc. Max Wedge)
'65-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"
'71-'74= 57 7/8"
'71-'73 wagon= 59 7/16"
I currently have all these rear housings except I'm out of the 68-70 right now and sold a 71-3 wagon rear a while back.

I stand corrected! Wow the 62-63 is so close to the Abod rear! thank you!
I wish I were closer I'd pick up a 71-74 rear from you to replace the 9.25 I have in my car now.

I just like the ease of changing gears, setting up gears, changing out bearings, seals...etc, that the 8.75 rear offers. But for sure it's getting easier to get parts and especially easy and cheaper getting suregrip centers! lol
