What do you guys use to remove the sticky adhesive that remains on the window frame after the thicker stuff is scraped off? I tried mineral spirits with little success. Acetone would not touch it. Comments please.

That old butyl is some nasty stuff to remove. Laquer thinner softens it somewhat, but it is still tough to get off.

Old Gaskets are Butyl rubber. Newer gaskets are EPDM (Neoprene). Both have a chemical that dissolves them.

Butyl rubber does not like Xylol or Xylene which will soften it and make it easier to remove (Home Depot/Lowes). If you want something more aggressive use MEK (I do not recommend MEK, it is very very bad for your health and the environment). MEK will dissolve it to sludge.

Neoprene does not like Chlorine (it causes it to crack and harden) so bleach will remove it.

Always be safe! Use Nitrile gloves, safety goggles (for splashback) and lots of fresh air. have a fan on you to blow away the fumes.

Unless your repainting the car there is no reason to remove every bit of it,just stick the new over it.If repainting the car use a wire wheel.
