69 runner side moulding

Hey guys, Im trying to figure out the best way to put the side moulding back on my friends 69 runner. Ive got the new clips, but the moulding was already off when he brought me the car so Im just guessing about how to put it back. any help would be great. (the moulding between the wheelwells below the door)

that would be the rocker moulding. I've read somewhere that it is easier to install the clips on the moulding first then space them to the holes and pop it in.

I thought about that, but it appears I have the wrong kind of clips for that. these have a hole in the center that you insert a plastic rod in to spread the fingers and grip the hole. I dont think I can pop them in if I insert the rod first
