I was curious to see if anyone had mounted a 71-4 Bench B Body pistol grip shifter in their 68-70 console B-body and especially if it's mated to a tkx/tko

I'm planning on doing a tkx swap on my 69 Charger with Auto and console and I would like to get a pistol grip shifter when I do. I know that the correct b-body console pistol grip shifter exists which would work in my application, but I personally don't like the length of those shifters and prefer the look of the medium length 71-74 bench b body pistol grip shifter.

I understand that I might need to do some smaller mods to the shifter itself, but I'm concerned if it would fit the tkx transmission and B-body console at all, if its awkward to have the shifter that far in front, and if there's a risk of banging your hand into the dash when doing a power shift.

I've attached an image of the shifter I had in mind that I found when browsing the web along with one of a short shifter in a b-body console as well as what I think is the medium length in two different b-bodies, but I'm not quite sure.

@Kern Dog I hope you don't mind me tagging you, but I found your great thread on TKO/TKX swaps and have started looking through the work you've done. Did you get your long shifter directly from the company you bought the TKO from and do you know if its using the same mount as the old pistol grip shifters (such as the mid-length)?

Hello.
AS far as I can tell, the shifter handle that came with this kit is supposed to look like the factory one from the console to the handle but from the console to the transmission, it had the be shaped different since it attaches to the transmission in a different place. The originals attached to the side of the transmission, the TKO attaches on the top and middle since they use internal shift linkage.
Good luck to you.

Hey, thanks for the reply! Yeah that makes sense, it seems like the oem type attaches to the shift linkage either by slip-in attachment (1970 only?) or two bolts. I guess the question I need to figure out then would be how the location of the shifter mount on the tremecs differ from the oem linkage shifter mount.

Do you know if the tremec shifter attachment is in the same forward location in the console as for oem or if it's moved anything forward or backwards? Trying to get to grips on if the mid length pistol grip will end up way too far forward or if it could be feasible in a 1969 b-body console

I think that their goal was to make it fit in the same spot.
I don't know for sure. I converted my car from an automatic transmission and just modified my console top plates to work with the placement of the shifter lever. I think that I asked around about the measurements of the top plate to see what was stock to see how close I was. I did the swap 3 1/2 years ago so some details are not clear in my mind.

Okay excellent! I will also be doing an auto to tremec conversion so it sounds promising that I can make it work, even if it will take a bit of tinkering with the mounts. Thanks again for the help!
