I am putting the dash back in my 72 RR and trying to tie up some loose ends before doing so. I noticed my wiper switch (variable 3 speed) had a black wire broken off from the side casing. I figured it was a ground but the pictures online I see don't have a black wire soldered onto the side. Has anyone had experience with this? I don't see an issue soldering a wire back to the swith but want to make sure there should be one to begin with. The electircal on this car was severly messed up when I purchased it which is why the dash is out to begin with. Now if only Year One will send me the bleeping wiring harness I bought 3+ months ago! I do not have any pictures on me but will post some this evening to help. Thanks guys for all your help.

This is the back of a 1970 3 speed switch, note the resistor, should be about the same as yours.

Thats almost spot on to mine but I have an extra black wire soldered to the side of the cylinder. It looks like its supposed to be there but I havent seen anything close to it online.

real variable switches were available just on 71s... 72s began to got just 3 speeds... both uses same wiring but diff plugs and prongs disposition... this a year change between 71 and laters, not function change really.

here is a 71 2 speeds

The variable switch posted from ebay looks virtually the same than the two speeds, same size and same prongs disposition... then from 72 are like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-MOPAR-1...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7c4d1f28&vxp=mtr

3 speeds are with the external resistor ( 71s resistor is built in )... 2 speeds without:

OF COURSE, harness got a change on plugs for this.

THEN, everything is the same for standard Clusters, just longer shaft

Now, talking about wires... I can recall on ANY 3rd gen assembly any Black wire, just pink which is the main power source, brown which is the washer then all the same wires arriving to motor ( blue, red, green and another brown ).

Switch gets ground actually from chassis, so maybe was an extra reinforcement from earlier owner ?

as stated ALL SETUPS got same wiring. nothing extra for diff function.

Yeah thats, what I was thinking myself. Mine looks exactly like this one and I put a circle where the wire is. My brother did have an issue with an electrical short and its possible it could have melted into it but that seems unlikely. I will still post a true picture tonight so I can get feed back. It just doesnt make any sense to me why a wire would be soldered there. Is $250 a good price for this switch or are there better alternative should I need a new one? Thanks again for the help!

I don't think is bad, just got a ground reinforcement for whatever reason... despite/remove the wire, and try to use it without that. Reinforce instead the ground to the cluster.

and no, that is way overpriced. I got long time ago a good used one in less than $30 from BradsNosParts... working perfect.

I just posted that auction because was the first I found, but mostly sure there are lot available way cheaper

cheaper, but still overpriced:

of course... NOS. I bet you can find aftermarket replacements on fair price

BradsNosParts:

I guess NOS, not used like the oen I got from them long time ago

already sold, but is posible:

anyway, my suggestion is, fit and test your one, I bet is not bad

on a side note:

I bet A bodies are same switches, with just the housing diff due the shaft lenght... What I'm sure is standard clusters are also the same because I already modified one once when I still had 2 speeds setup and changed from standard to rallye cluster. I cut the standard cluster switch I had to fit on the Rallye cluster. I bet these can be available on $50-80 rate NOS.

If your one doesn't work really and you can't fix it, get a standard cluster one, remove the inners allong with bakelite prongs plate and install them on the Rallye cluster switch housing

Tahnks Nacho, that helps me out a lot! I will see if it works and if not I will look into that. Thankfully I dont have to remove everything back out if it is bad.

Here are the 71-4B W/switches. As Nacho stated the V/speed is 71 and actually early 72. Then was placed with the 3-spd. No ground wire on the switch housing.
