I bought a 72 charger over the summer and now I'm starting to get into the thick of it. I've been searching everywhere trying to find a car with similar grooves as the first picture and am coming up with nothing. I assume they have to do with the vinyl roof. the second picture is of the notch and I think it's due to the forming of that roof lip but am not sure if it has a real function if it should be there. Thanks.

You have a 72 charger SE. That is a plug welded in for a different style of rear window that the vinyl top would cover.
The front gap is just there that the chrome moulding will cover. Part of the production process.

Excellent thank you, I figured as much but wanted a solid answer first. Could you point me in the direction of how the SE vinyl top is different than the other versions?

Main thing about the 72 SE is the quarter glass. Smallest quarter glass out of all the 71-4 B-bodies.

That plug is 72 only SE only, and the drip rail is different as well as the interior panel.
(and of course, the chrome trim)

IIRC the glass is the same as a non-SE and a71.

The "grove" is filled in at least partially, with filler.

What part exactly, are you looking for?

Should say the quarter glass opening is the smallest.
71 quarter glass is different than 72-4

So I bought it and one of the grooves was filled with bondo, and so I removed it so both sides match. I guess my question is, when I go to sand it all down and paint it and prep for the vinyl roof, is there anything different I would have to do? And is the SE vinyl different than any other 72 model?

Don't know if there is anything else that you need to do or not do.
Yes the SE vinyl roof is different than any other 72 Charger models. That being said you have to have an SE vinyl roof.
BTW do you have anymore pics of the car?

Here's my SE.

71 is diff
72 is diff
73/74 is diff

everything of this talking about hardtop models ( roll down quarter windows ), including 71 and 72 SE. On 72 SE just the opening was made smaller but glass remains the same than the rest of hardtops.

HOWEVER, 71 and 72 can be interchanged as full assembly as far I know. 71 is a pot metal base attached to regulator system where the glass mounts. 72 is full glass piece attached to regulator system, like 73/74 are

Never knew that 71 and 72 NON SE windows were different. Although the outside appearance is the same correct? Maybe different trim?

Okay thanks Nacho!!

So it's the unseen that's different.

Yeah Ma Mopar did a real crappy job on the 72 SE. I pulled the vinyl roof off mine and the bondo started falling out to expose the grand canyon. Not much you can do but fill it back up and slap a new vinyl roof on.

So you ended up filling the groove with bondo to support the vinyl roof and the groove has no real purpose?

Correct. The shape of the quarter glass is determined by the outer quarter panel. Instead of making different quarter panels they use a standard Charger panel and added a filler for the smaller SE quarter glass. Fill the gap and make it go away. They did the same on the 73/4 SE Opera quarter glass.
