Did the 72 roadrunner 340 come with a vacuum pump? I never saw one on mine but when my brother gave me his extra parts he had an old canister with it. If so where does it go and does anyone have any pictures? My window washer is in the front right (passenger side) so im not sure where it would be located. I do have power brakes.

My next question would be if it doesn't have one should I get one if I plan on stroking the engine or going higher horsepower. I am not super familiar with vacuum pumps. Thanks for the help.

There was no factory installed vacuum pumps on a ’72 Road Runner. Canister? Do you mean vacuum reservoir? Looks like a tin can with hose nipples and a mounting bracket? Only vacuum reservoir used on a ’72 road Runner would have been for N96, Air Grabber system.

Here is a picture of what it looked like.

I believe this is for a 73 but the one i had looked like it and when it got knocked off the shelf, A bunch of coal looking stuff came out the bottom of it. It very well could not be for my car but I wanted to check. My brother said that if I ran more power and a mild cam that I may have trouble with my power brakes due to a lack of vacuum so I wanted to get feed back. I remember my 73 had one of these up on the front passenger side but never on a 72. Thanks for the feedback.

That’s a charcoal canister, part of the evaporative recovery system, yes it’s full of charcoal particles. Has nothing to do with engine vacuum and or power brakes. Of the two pictures you posted the 4 nipple version is correct for ’72, 3-nipple version is ’73 and up. Only high over-lap cams (more radical) can create vacuum issues for power brakes, most mild cams don’t require adding vacuum pumps.

Awesome Thanks! Now I know my car is supposed to have one. In the picture with the one attached, is that where it goes? Is it imperative that I have one or are there other alternatives? Heck, mine has had one on it since 1996. As far as the brakes go, that is what I thought, I don't plan on doing any thing crazy with the cam. I am looking at trying to get 450-500 ponies with a very mild cam set up. I plan on driving the car a lot so I want it to be easily streetable. Thanks a million!

Are these made reproduction as well as the mounting screws and hoses needed? Thanks so much for you help, this helps me understand why there are holes in that spot. I never knew what it was for. I want to try and be as original style as possible but doesn't have to be. I could not find anything on yearone/classic

I also found a link to roadrunner nest and the picture I found is actually from a thread just like this in case someone else has the same questions.

I have the OEM mounting brackets and screws if you need them for your charcoal canister.

I may take you up on that! I have to find an oem though. I can't find them online. I also need to find a line to run from the tank. My brother didn't know what it was for so he just cut it off.

I have all of the complete OEM lines, fuel, vent, brakes as well, rust free. All OEM frame rail clips and screws.

For the most part, its a hard line mainly. A flex line from the canister to the hard line. Hard line all the way back with a little flex line to tank. Flex line can be purchase from local parts store. The actual clamps for the flex lines are repopped as well. Need a tool to sinch them down.
