can a bell housing be put on a big block 727 to fit a small block? thanks in advance

Not as far as I know....bell housings are for manual gearbox's .Auto's (727) have transmission case.
You could swap the front transmission case to a small block. And keep all the 'guts'

You can swap cases. It takes less than an hour.
