I have a 73 charger that I'm looking to move the bumpers in on and remove the filler panels because they look like crap in my opinion..so has anyone else done this? Is it a hard process? I'm assuming some cutting needs to be done...will moving the bumpers effect the headlights/grill? Thanks any insight/pictures would be appreciated.

I've seen a couple of folks do this. You're going to need to cut, weld, and rechrome, all of which can get expensive so better really like the look.

Personally I would not do this because that space enables your bumper to take an impact without damaging the sheet metal, which is why they were made mandatory. There are lots of ways to improve the looks of a car without increasing the risk of expensive body repair from a minor fender bump.

Get 71-2 rear bumper mounts. Easy swap.
On the front just drill new holes in the mounts where they bolt to the frame rails.

As stated above but also keep in Mind the tail lights won't fit after you do this you'll need to mod the 73-74 tail lights or just get 71-72 lights the plugs on the 73-74 stick out toward the car hitting the rear metal (mod this and your good) 71-72 go toward the ground . ,this is a very easy processes and makes the car look great after the Orange car is a 73 with this done to it . attachment-20140520-101552.jpg1900742_orig-1.jpgView attachment 256086

A bunch of fellows have done it over at the third gen forum.
Front, they just elongated the mounting holes, or you could get a pair of 71-2 bumper brackets.
Rear you will need the 71-2 brackets as they mount flush ... but it can be done with out touching the bumpers themselves.

71-72 front brackets don't work because of the ISO K frame.

71-72 rears work.

Slot the fronts. That works.

Sweet thanks! Should have mentioned I have 72 tail lights installed already!

That just makes life a little easyer for you then.

yes the 74 tail lights fit without mods

no mods ....

Is the wireing crunched up behind them? I've done 4 diff 73-74 cars s.e. and non s.e cars and non fit without causing harm to the wireing ,
I'm not saying your wrong it's interesting Chrysler had some very crudely put together cars maybe your car has a bit more room then other's. Is there anyone else that has done this with out mod of the 73-74 tail lights ? I'd like to know ,I have my 74 sunroof car I'm going to be doing the bracket swap on soon maybe I'll get lucky and this one will fit (I didn't want to mod to much on the sunroof car)
Thanks for your input now my gears are turning .
I've also run across 2 diff 1972 car (all vins matching org owners) with 73-74 body lines and rear 1/4 Windows threw me for a curve ball .so I guess never say never

its definitely tight , but no , the wires and sockets are not crunched up, the wiring does turn down but are not pinched or folded. the housings are bolted to bumper like they are supposed to. im using the 73 74 fill tube and it fits behind the plate no sweat.

That is very interesting. On most the socket hit or have the wireing so kinked that after a week of driving there would be a problem with rub holes .
But we are talking about less then 1/4 " so it could be anything a rechromed bumper with a little more thinkness where the bracket go's or?
Well there it is it's doable on some.

one thing is of they fit comfortably and different if they fit tight... but definitelly fit
